Cure for hiccups-Hiccups cure
Hiccups cure: Considering the fact that there are over 100 causes to hiccups, then you can imagine that there are a lot of suggested methods to rid yourself of hiccups also. There are the most common ones such as drinking a glass of water and holding your breath, but there are many others as well which are said to work just as well. It is a case of trying them all until you find the one that works for you.
Personally, I tend to let the hiccups take their course, they only last for a few minutes, sometimes not long enough for me to get up and fetch a drink. By the time I have gone to the kitchen to pour myself a glass of water they are gone.
Home remedies for hiccups:
Several natural home remedies are used to deal with hiccups. A lot of them involve raising the amount of carbon dioxide in the blood stream, which often ends hiccups. Some of these hiccups home remedies and hiccups cures include:
- Hold your breath for up to 30 seconds or more while you swallow.
- Holding your breath and counting slowly to 10.
- Breathing continuously into a paper bag for a limited time period.
- Drink a glass of water without taking a breath, drink it all in one go.
- Taking a tea spoon of honey or sugar.
- Have someone make you jump.
- Use smelling salts, although I did not find this effective.
- Have the person pull on their tongue, pull it with a bit of force, don’t be gentle.
- Place half a teaspoon of sugar on the back of the tongue (for adults only).
There are other suggestions as to how to get rid of hiccups but I am not sure how effective they are such as naming ten bald men without taking a breath? How is that meant to work? Apparently it works by taking the sufferers mind off of the fact that they have the hiccups, the diaphragm then will relax and the hiccups are said to subside.
If hiccupping continues for more than 48 hours then you should visit a doctor, there may be an underlying medical condition. There have been reported hiccupping attacks which have been caused by Cancer treatment. If the hiccupping is prolonged in these cases again seek medical advice as due to the fact that Cancer treatment can make you feel weaker and hiccupping can slow your heart. It is best to get it checked out.
Hiccups medical treatment:
With minor bouts of hiccups home remedies will do the trick perfectly, or they will go away by themselves, but in the case where the hiccupping is worse, then you may need medical intervention. This is not very often the case as it is rare to get hiccups to the point where you need medical help.
In the case of severe, continuing hiccups over 48 hours then Chlorpromazine might be a prescription medication that your doctor may try.
Medications commonly used in treating long term hiccups include:
- Chlorpromazine-an antipsychotic
- Metoclopramide (Reglan)- an anti-nausea drug
- Baclofen (Lioresal)-a muscle relaxant
